Very Special Note: Please Heed: Very Important !

 If you are a survivor spouse of a Veteran,  no matter when or where the Veteran served, who was receiving some kind of Veterans benefits, no matter of what kind of benefits the Veteran was receiving, before the Veteran Spouse passed away:

You the Surviving spouse ( whether you are female or male ), and dependent, may be eligible for some sort of  continued  survivor spouse monthly pension payment, or monthly compensation, and other VA Benefits, such as education, health care, special needs, etc.

No matter, even if you think that you, might not have any benefits allowed to you, and dependents, as a surviving spouse of a recently deceased Veteran that was receiving some sort of VA Benefits:

You might find it in your best interest, to check immediately after the deceased spouse Veteran, to find out if there are some sort of benefits available  for you . You can check to find out if you are eligible for survivors, and/or dependents Benefits.

You can check with the, U . S .Department of Veterans Affairs: Call Toll Free: 1-800-827-1000 or you can go to the nearest VA regional Office, in your State, County, or City. IF or when you decide to contact the VA: Most likely you are going to need: (A). the deceased Veterans full name. (B).  VA Claim File Number and/or social security number. (c). A copy of the Decease Certificate. (D). A copy of Your Marriage License. (E). If there dependents, you will need copies of their Birth Certificates, and their social security Numbers if they have a number.

However, the VA may need other  documents and/ or information. The VA will give you some time to get what ever the VA might need from you.

Special Note: Don’t hesitate nor procrastinate; time is of the essence, because there is a time cut off, for filing for Survivors Spouse, and dependents benefits ! If you are eligible for benefit, and don’t file within the VA designated time frame, you just might lose out ! Act right away !!!

Death Gratuity Payment

Military services provide payment, called a death gratuity, in the amount of $100,000 to the next of kin of Service members who die while on active duty (including those who die within 120 days of separation) as a result of service-connected injury or illness. If there is no surviving spouse or child, then parents or siblings des­ignated as next of kin by the Service member may be provided the payment. The payment is made by the last military command of the deceased. If the beneficiary is not paid automatically, application may be made to the military service concerned.

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation Eligibility: For Survivor to eligible for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC), the Veterans death must have resulted from one of the following causes:

  1.  A disease or injury incurred or aggravated in the line of duty while on active duty or active duty for training.
  2. An injury, heart attack, cardiac arrest, or stroke incurred or aggravated in the line of duty while on inactive duty for training.
  3. A service-connected disability or a condition directly related to a serviceconnected disability.

DIC also may be paid to certain survivors of Veterans who were totally disabled from service-connected conditions at the time of death, even though their service-connected disabilities did not cause their deaths. The survivor qualifies if the Veteran was:

  1. Continuously rated totally disabled for a period of 10 years immediately preceding death; or
  2. Continuously rated totally disabled from the date of military discharge and for at least 5 years immediately preceding death; or
  3. A former POW who died after Sept. 30, 1999, and who was continuously rated totally disabled for a period of at least one year immediately preceding death.

 Special Note: Check with the VA to see what Survivors benefits that you might be eligible for and entitled to, because the VA might have certain benefits for you that might not be posted for someone who do not know if they qualify for certain benefits. You can certainly check the VA out and find out directly from the VA if you qualify for any benefits. Call Toll-Free and ask if you Qualify for benefits. 1-800-827-1000.

Also check with the U. S . A .Social Security Administration: to find out if you qualify for any of the deceased spouse, Dependent and Survivors Benefits. You might want to Contact the Social Security, as quickly as you can !
